In the twelfth century the Chinese envoy Xu Jing was so impressed with the smooth glaze and lovely green tone of the 'jade-coloured celadon' (pisaek - ch'ongja) that he compared the Goryeo pieces to the Ru [Ju] ware of Northern Song, the rarest of all the ceramics made for the Chinese court. Description: plate (dish), white porcelain with underglaze blue decoration, and red line around rim and cavetto Kenkichi Tomimoto (1886-1963) was born in Ando.After study at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, he travelled to England, which influenced his decision to produce ceramics upon his return to Japan, where he worked with visiting English potter Bernard Leach. His first works were mostly stoneware, strongly influenced by Korean Ceramics. From the 1920s, Tomimoto began working mainly with porcelain, perfecting a cobalt blue underglaze which he used simply and boldly in the form of brushwork decoration on a white background. In 1946 he was appointed head of Kyoto College of Fine Arts, where he emphasized the importance of studying historical examples, the development of original designs and harmony of decoration and shape. In 1955 Tomimoto was named a Living National Treasure and in 1961 received the Order of Cultural Merit.

Description: pot, buncheong ware, stoneware, white monochrome glaze, clear glazed known as a hagae, a small pot in good line with a slip pattern (kwiyal) typical of the period. When official kilns for the production of white porcelain were established in the 15th century, buncheong wares gradually disappeared by the mid 16th century. White porcelain became the new symbol of absolute purity. The new Joeson dynasty sought order and respect and the white porcelain stood for purity discretion and humbleness. Simple design without any decoration strengthened this aspect of white porcelain production. No colour was desired. Official clothes became white. King Sejong even issued a decree that the royal court would exclusively use white porcelain kitchenware.(from Korean Gallery label copy)
