panels, dress
Description: panels, dress, two, natural coloured tussah silk with surface embroidery of similar colour; three sections of embroidery of floral and foliate design, satin stitch with areas of raised and padded satin stitch with areas of honeycomb-like work to the centre of the large flowers; one long edge of each piece has been worked in a scalloped embroidery design, presumably to form a finished edge when made up into a garment; embroidery has been worked across the weft of the material (selvedge to selvedge); evidence of pencil marks on the upperside of the fabric as a guide for the embroidery pattern; these panels are similar in style to an embroidered garment c.1905 already in the collection with a provenance from Italy, Coll 2408.
