An historical account of the circumnavigation of the globe and of the progress of discovery in the Pacific Ocean from the voyage of Magellan to the death of Cook
Description: The anonymous author of this work may have been Hugh Murray (q.v.), who had previously published Adventures of British seamen in the southern ocean, Edinburgh, 1827. An interesting footnote (p. 223-224) reprints an excerpt from Cook's journal relating to the transit of Venus, published earlier in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London (vol. Ixi, part ii, p. 410). The first edition of the present work was published in Edinburgh and London in 1836. There were many other editions, including American editions, in 1837,1839, 1842, and 1845. This work contains accounts of the voyages of Columbus; the discovery of the South Seas by Marco Polo and by Vasco Nunez de Balboa; the circumnavigation of Magellan; voyagers of the rest of the sixteenth century, including Villalobos; of the seventeenth century, including Quiros and Tasman; of the eighteenth century, including Dampier and Anson; the circumnavigations of Byron, Wallis, and Carteret; the voyage of Bougainville; Furneaux; and five chapters devoted to the three voyages of Captain Cook. The sequel to this work is Voyages round the world, from the death of Captain Cook to the present time (q.v.). ? Hill 812
