Rubu
Description: Rubu. Bag. For carrying personal items. Woven from voivoi (pandanus), double-layered, rectangular in shape, consisting of four sides (two which are patterned), lid and base. Commencement from base for both inner and outer layers. Wood, bitu (bamboo) or dogo (mangrove) frame to maintain rectangular structure. Inner layer consists of strips of voivoi woven out in check. Base consists of wide strips of voivoi altering to a fine check weave at all four sides of rubu. Front and back sides are decorated with strips of somo (dyed-black voivoi) and natural coloured strips of voivoi arranged to create geometric and checkered patterns. Lid woven out in check decorated with somo and natural coloured voivoi strips. Tali rua (2-ply braid) looped and sewn near edge of lid using voivoi strips forming latch that is secured with a button made of voivoi strips. Rounded handle tali va (4-ply braid) using natural coloured strips of voivoi, looped and threaded through sides and base in between inner and outer layers of rubu.
