Description: A pictorial reconstruction of the Houhora village looking south across Rangauni Bay, based on the excavation of part of the village. Fish drying racks are present on which hang snapper preserved during the summer months. Large double-hulled canoes for longer voyages, and single canoes suitable for fishing, are on the beach. Deforestation of the slopes of Mt Camel for firewood and to clear gardening land resulted in landslips evident in the archaeological excavation. Description: Reconstruction of Raupa depicted in the late afternoon of 17 June 182 when the Rev. Samuel Marsden and his party were welcomed to the settlement by the chief, probably Te Hikamate of Ngati Tamatera. Depiction of the visitors and host group is based upon Marsden's description. The size and orientation of the large house depend upon the 1987 archaeological evidence, as do the cooking area and storage pit at the right rear and the presence of pigs in the foreground.
