Description: Walpole served on HMS Collingwood, the flagship of Rear Admiral Sir George Seymour and the first British ship-of-the-line to enter the Pacific Ocean via Cape Horn since the voyage of Lord Anson in 1741. 'Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Juan Fern▀ndez, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Mexico, California, the Hawaiian Islands, and Samoa were visited. The Collingwood arrived at Monterey a few days after the American flag had been raised there by John Drake Stoat' (Hill). A lengthy note in Forbes testifies to the book's importance to Hawaii. The Collingwood anchored at Byron Bay, Hilo in August 1846. There is a good description of Hilo and the vicinity, and a particularly fine description of the author's trek to see the volcano of Kilauea. Otherwise, there is an account of an official audience at the palace and the king's visit to the Collingwood in Honolulu. Many of his observations on native life and mores was based on the opportunity for first hand description, the result of a fall which led to him convalescing in a place with a view of the Valley of Nuuanu.

Description: This book is one of the principal accounts of the Wager, which was wrecked off the southern coast of Chile after rounding Cape Horn. Under the command of Captain Cheap, the Wager was one of Anson's fleet, which was on its way to harass the Spanish. After the wreck, gunner John Bulkeley and carpenter John Cummins conducted the mutinous part of the crew until they arrived safely in Rio de Janeiro.
