Some account of New Zealand : particularly the Bay of Islands, and surrounding country : with a description of the religion and government, language, arts, manufactures, manners, and customs of the natives, &c. &c
Description: "Savage, Assistant Surgeon to the Government of New South Wales, 1802-5, while returning to England on the 'Ferret', spent September and October in the Bay of Islands, when the vessel was loading spars. The book summarises his observations supported, more importantly, by information which he was given by the chief Moehanga, who accompanied him. Despite the book's status as the first work devoted entirely to New Zealand (since Cook), Savage's text is disappointing. Little detail on the vessel's stay in the Bay or on actual contact with the Maori while much information on custom is incorrect. Without Moehanga, who may not have understood Savage's questions, there is unlikely to have been a narrative at all"--Bagnall, 5019.
