19th annual Going West book & writers festival 2014 : festival programme, August-September 2014
Description: ""The only way to save oneself alive in the bewildering formlessness of our time is to draw distinctions, to establish small islands of meaning, and there gradually to build up something well-founded and definite that can defy the chaos." So wrote poet and editor Charles Brasch in his 1941 journal. How very prescient he was given the time, but no less so today. This observation's continuing resonance in the 21st century inspired our Programme Director Murray Gray to choose 'Small Islands of Meaning' to form the heart and theme of this year's Going West Books & Writers Festival. Every year the extraordinary range of literary talent, knowledge and creativity, gathered from around the country, offers us the opportunity to weave together our own 'small islands of meaning' in what can sometimes be bewildering, cacophonous times. We look forward to sharing this year's literary adventure with you. Enjoy!" -- Nicola Strawbridge, Welcome (p.5)
