The six colonies of New Zealand
Description: Descriptive outline in three part, the six settlements, Wellington, Nelson, Otago, Canterbury, Taranaki, and Auckland, secondly the Maoris [Maori] and thirdly Government. Fox?s leading role as an explorer, New Zealand Company agent and incipient colonial politician gave the book an authority and pungency lacking from so many contemporary accounts. Hocken points out that Sewell wrote the section on waste lands, p.98-108, and that the book as a whole was written by Fox when in England in 1851 ?Chiefly at the request of the Duke of Newcastle? to discredit the colonial record of the Tory Government. Critical comments on the work and its author in the New Zealand Sectator 4 and 14 February 1852.? -- Bagnall, 2035.
