Description: Shipboard diary kept by William Court Sweetland from 23 August 1881 to 17 February 1882, during his voyage from London, England, to Auckland, via Tauranga, New Zealand, on the ship 'May Queen'. Diary contains a daily account of life aboard the 'May Queen', including distances sailed each day. The following passengers are mentioned: William Carlton, of Durham (p. 14); Mr [William] Bamford (pp. 16, 28 and 30); Mr [Arscott] Marsh, of Morebath, Devonshire (pp. 19 and 32); Miss [Martha] Timms (p. 28); Captain MacMillan (p. 28); Mr [Arthur] Ford (p. 31); Mr [Alfred] Press (p. 30); Mr David Harman, of Rochdale (p. 31); Mr [Robert] Whyte, of Nottingham (pp. 32, 43, 51 and 63); Mr [George Russell] Fellows, of Darlington, Durham (p. 38); Mr [Frederick] Symes (pp. 51 and 63); Joseph Cowan (p. 42); Mr [George Clayton] Deverell, farmer, of Oxfordshire (p. 53). After his arrival in Auckland, per the steamer 'Wellington', Sweetland mentions the following individuals: Tom Bailey, of Whangarei (p. 81); Richard Battersby (p. 81) and his brother George (p. 85), both of Auckland; Heywood family, of Ponsonby, Auckland (p. 84). The diary was later sent to William Sweetland's sister, Miss Sarah Ann Sweetland, of Pembroke Dock, South Wales, in late February, 1882, with the intention of its being passed around the family and eventually on to Sweetland's parents, James and Mary Sweetland, of Lowton, Somersetshire, England.
