War memoir entitled "Big Dinny" written by Jack D. Wright [12/3520 John Deloitte Wright, MM], circa 1965
Description: Although largely centred around the exploits of fellow First World War veteran 12/3398 Alexander ('Dinny') McClennan, DCM, the memoir also contains a number of wartime memories of Wright's own time spent serving with No. 4 Platoon, 16th (Waikato) Company, 2nd Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment. Both men were present at Armentieres and the Battle of the Somme. Wright's accounts of these engagements, however, are somewhat superficial and their content reflects events remembered after nearly fifty years (typescript; paged 1-24). Also included is a covering letter from Jack Wright to Norman R.W. Thomas [son of A.P.W. Thomas], dated 25 September 1965, and two additional letters relating to Wright's memoir, one of which was by former Waikato veteran 12/2979 Robert ('Bob') Vincent Closey who, along with two other veterans, Watty McInness and Jim Smillie, took part in the bombing attack in which Dinny McClennan was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM).
