flute
Description: flute, single vase of double vase " Silbador whistling pots", ceramic. Elliptically shaped figure with flat base. Upper end of neck is a crow or raven head and completely enclosed. At rear of head is 23x23mm unburnished, rough clay area showing where handle or bridging was attached. Upper body has 5 rectangular incised panels. The two panels under the bird's beak have birds in raised relief, facing outwards. These birds have long beaks and and are holding objects (herons? spoonbills?). Surrounding the birds are multiple raised clay dots. The remaining two complete panels on either side of the projection contain a stylised bird surrounded by small circles within which is a clay dot. The other has dots and circles. All of these appear to have been produced using a stamp or punch. The fifth panel has similar circle patterns with one end of bridging tube of clay within it. this has been broken and repaired with filler, obscuring part of the pattern. The protruding tube flares out at the opposite end and is rough clay. This together with the missing piece near the head suggests it was joined to another flask. Handmade, black slip applied all over and burnished on the body and raised birds, but not on the rectangular dot pattern. Peru
