For millions of years, the song of the birds echoed throughout Aotearoa, with no one around to hear it. While the arrival of humans would transform their story forever - birds may have changed us even more. To celebrate the launch of Song of the Birds, join Robert Vennell, Project Curator Natural Sciences here at Auckland Museum, as he talks about his new book releasing in Spring 2026.
Robert will be joined by Catherine Hammond, Director of Collections and Research at Auckland Museum, as well as taonga from the collection that speaks to the what you will find in Robert's latest work.
Song of the Birds will be available for purchase at this event, with Robert there to sign your copy.
Robert Vennell is the bestselling author of The Meaning of Trees: The history and use of New Zealand's native plants and Secrets of the Sea: The story of New Zealand's native sea creatures. He works as a Project Curator in Natural Sciences at Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum where he is part of the team redeveloping the natural science galleries.
For this event we’re inviting you to set the price for your ticket yourself and pay what you can to participate. You can enter any amount and book up to four tickets at this amount.
Any contribution will enable the development and preservation of collections, the delivery of new exhibitions, important research, and exciting educational programmes. It will also ensure the continued restoration of the historic Museum building, a touchstone for rememberance and home to sacred taonga.
