Accessibility

E-lockers

For the comfort and safety of visitors and collections, large bags, backpacks and tripods cannot be taken into the galleries. 

At both the north and south entrances to the Museum, electronic self-service lockers are available to leave your bags and other possessions. In Te Ao Mārama South Atrium these are located in the Kai Room and Welcome Lounge, and within the Grand Foyer, they are located beside 1929 Espresso Bar. Charges apply for their use. The Museum reserves the right to require bags and motorcycle helmets be deposited here for security reasons. Please see our full Conditions of entry here

Eating and drinking

The Museum has several food and drink outlets, as well as a Kai Room for school groups and visitors who choose to self-cater. You can find more information here.

Food and drink can’t be taken into our galleries beyond the Grand Foyer and Te Ao Mārama/South Atrium.

We encourage our visitors to stop in the Domain to enjoy packed lunches and snacks.

Water fountains are located within Te Ao Mārama/ South Atrium in the Welcome Lounge and Kai Room, on Level One in Weird and Wonderful, and on Level Two in the Library.

First Aid

First Aid kits can be found:

  • Ground level: All ticket desks
  • Level One: Weird and Wonderful
  • Level Two: Pou Maumahara and Library


Or you can ask any Museum representative for assistance.

Information desks

Staffed by Museum volunteers, the information Desk is located in the Grand Foyer. Ask at these desks for information on anything you need while at the Museum.

Lost property

For any Lost Property concerns please talk to our Visitor Hosts who are happy to assist.

Parent's facilities

A Parent's Room is situated on the Ground Floor next to 1929 Espresso Bar, adjacent to the Grand Foyer. This facility includes a comfortable chair for feeding, a microwave for bottle warming and a change table. 

In the Kai Room on the Ground Floor adjacent to Te Ao Mārama South Atrium, there is a microwave for bottle warming and high chairs available. There is a change table in the adjacent accessible toilets.

For events in the Auditorium or Auditorium Lobby on Level 2, there is a Parent's Room with comfortable chair for feeding and a change table.

Photography and filming

Photography with flash and video recording, using hand-held equipment, is permitted in most galleries for non-commercial use only.

Shopping

Hokohoko, the Museum Store, is located within Te Ao Mārama/South Atrium.
 

Smoking

Smoking is not permitted in any area of the Museum at any time.

Taxis

Information Desk staff are also happy to assist.

Toilets

Toilets are located on the ground floor of the Grand Foyer, in Te Ao Mārama, the Kai Room, and are also available on Level One and Level Two.  

There are four accessible toilets in the Grand Foyer and four accessible toilets within the South Atrium and Level One.

There are gender-neutral toilets within the Kai Room, Level One – Weird & Wonderful, and Level 2 – Library.
