They've had 66 million birthdays - now they're here for yours!

For a limited time, you can hold a birthday party at Auckland Museum with two very special guests - Peter and Barbara the T. rex!

Join dino wrangler and your host, Dr Pennsylvania Smith, for a birthday party like no other.

What did a T. rex sound like? Why are Peter’s bones black? What secret was Barbara carrying? What was the point of those puny arms? Invite your fave friends and come on an adventure to discover these fab facts and more. Then head out on a prehistoric scavenger hunt around the galleries. Next, get up close with some real fossils, create some crafts, and even play a birthday game or two.

And for younger kids, we're also offering Little Critters parties for kids aged 3 - 6 years. We'll go on a dino hunt, make our own clay fossils and other crafts, enjoy stories and games, and generally stomp around like we rule the earth. There'll even be a special visit from Gertie, our baby dryosaur.

Adults, whichever party you choose, all you need to do is let your guests know the time and place, and we’ll do the rest. You don't need to bring decorations when the whole Museum is your party location.

Jam-packed with activities, your child and their buddies will have a roarsome time.

And if you’d like to farewell your guests with goodie bags, we can organise that for you too.

Frequently asked questions

+Will there be a coat / bag check?

We will have a bag cage set up for your belongings so you can be confident they are safe while you explore the galleries. These are secured and lockable cages on wheels that store your items. Key access to these cages will be held by your birthday party host.

Don’t forget to take your phone or camera with you for photographs.

Please note the Auckland Museum accepts no liability for any possessions left in the bag cages.

+Will I be able to take photos or videos during the party?

Of course! Take lots of photos for memories of the event, but please try not to interfere with the activities taking place. We’ll make sure there’s time for a group photo beside Barbara and Peter the T. rex.

+What’s in the goodie bags?

A mini but mighty mix of dino-themed activities, treats and toys that will delight your little critters.

+What if a child needs to go the bathroom during the party?

One of the birthday hosts will direct you to the nearest bathroom. Please ensure that a supervising adult accompanies the child.

+Refunds/Cancellation Policy

A cancellation fee of 50% of the total will be charged for no shows and cancellations when written notice is not provided to bookings@aucklandmuseum.com at least 10 working days prior to your booking. The cancellation fee will be deducted from your refund. A re-booking fee of 50% applies when parties are rescheduled within 10 working days.

+How should we get there?

We encourage you to use public and active transport options where possible. Parking at the Museum and in the Domain can be in high demand during busy periods such as weekends and school holidays. We also have limited paid parking available in the Museum's underground car park - see here for full details on transport options and parking details. If you are driving, please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before the party is due to start.

+How far in advance should we book?

We recommend booking as soon as possible in order to secure a spot. Bookings must be made at least 10 working days in advance of the party date.

+How do we get into the Museum?

Please enter Auckland Museum via the South Atrium entrance into Te Ao Mārama.

Once you have entered Te Ao Mārama, gather by the welcome chalkboard featuring your birthday child’s name. Your hosts will meet you there.

If you park in the underground carpark (please note daily rates apply and this is not part of your birthday package) access to the south entrance can be made via the stairs and lifts from the car park.

+Do we have our own party host?

Yes! The party and all associated activities will be led by an actor host and an assistant host.

+Do we have an allocated room for the party?

Our birthday parties take place across the whole Museum, rather than inside a room. You’ll begin with your hosts around Barbara and Peter the T. rex, then you’ll take a scavenger hunt around the galleries before heading into our Learning Labs for object handling, craft activities, and games.

+Can we pay for parties in instalments?

Parties must be paid for in full at the time of booking.

+Can we eat or drink in the galleries?

Food and drink are not allowed in the galleries. You can bring in a water bottle, but all other food and drink needs to be consumed in designated eating areas.

+Can we bring in our own food and drink?

Puku Nui, our kai room on the ground floor is open to the public all day to consume your own kai. Please note that this is not a bookable space.

About Puku Nui

  • Puku Nui (the Kai Room) is located on the western side of Te Ao Mārama South Atrium next to Hokohoko (the Museum Store), and adjacent to the party’s starting location.
  • Puku Nui is an open space to the public and is not bookable for private events, therefore we request that you respect other guests also using these areas.
  • There are limited kitchen facilities in Puku Nui, including running water, bench space for food preparation and rubbish bins.
  • No eating utensils, etc. are provided on site. Guests to bring their own.
  • There are no fridge facilities available to store food in the Museum.
  • Puku Nui is a shared space, please tidy after use.
  • Party hosts are responsible for their own clean-up after using the kai room. Please remove all rubbish and ensure the space is tidy after use.

Alternatively, Tuitui Bistro in Te Ao Mārama is open to the public, and along with its normal menu will be selling cold T. rex platters for kids. This will be at an additional cost to your party package and will need to be purchased directly from them. View the menu here

There are bathroom facilities available in close proximity to all eating areas.

Weather permitting, you can also enjoy a picnic in the Domain before or after your party!

+Can more adults come along?

Unfortunately, we can’t accommodate every child’s caregiver.

All attending caregivers will be responsible for the following:

  • Providing effective supervision of all children for the duration of the party
  • Ensuring all children attending the party stay with the party group
  • Ensuring all children attending the party are collected at party’s end by a parent or caregiver

Our required attending caregiver/supervising adult ratios:

  • Little Critters parties = 1 Supervising Adult for every 3 children
  • Terrific T.rex parties = 1 Supervising Adult for every 5 children

We recommend more children than parents attend the parties. The maximum number of adults attending is 10.

When caregivers are dropping children off, they must accompany the child inside the Museum to the drop off area and to the adult supervising the party in Te Ao Mārama. At the conclusion of the party parents/caregivers must collect their children in Te Ao Mārama where they were dropped off.

Alternatively, non-supervising adults can take a stroll around the galleries or take a break in Tuitui Bistro for the duration of the party.
