LATE 2013: Athena and Ares - War and Violence

An interesting lens to start from for ‘War and Violence’ is those powerful figures of Greek mythology – Athena and Ares. Often lumped together they were quite different – one known for her heroic endeavour, and the other known for his love of war.
If Ares were to travel to the modern world, who would be his equal? To be sure, Ares’ deep love of War would have been more than satiated by the modern ways, and most certainly mechanized slaughter from the mid-20th century and beyond. It seems that for Athena, a virgin, and for Ares, it was certainly a case of making war, not love. Never have two Greek Gods been as applicable to modern life as these two.
Smart talk
Wallace Chapman moderated the panel, which included: Filmmaker Gaylene Preston, author Nicky Hager, RSA Chief Executive Dr Stephen Clarke, and Professor Kevin Clements, Foundation Chair of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago.
Great music
The Vietnam War: Auckland's first real country rebels. This long-standing five piece has supported The Blacks Keys and The National. Tattooed and soaked in whiskey, the Vietnam War are a rogue’s gallery of sorrow and life-worn tale tellers.
