LATE at Auckland Museum

LATE at Auckland Museum

Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira

Many New Zealanders would characterise our country as fair and equitable. But it depends where you’re standing.

Power and privilege can be a confronting subject to discuss – the idea of society’s engrained biases and unfairly-wielded influence is hard to debate without accusation. This LATE explores the idea of power and privilege – what is it, who has it and what are the implications for New Zealand society – and looks at how we can discuss issues of identity, power and privilege without condemning groups of people.

Moderated by Russell Brown, our panel will discuss the importance of owning our privilege – and the discomfort that comes with it – and using it to grow our awareness of inequality and call it out when we see it. Join Georgina Beyer, the ground-breaking former MP and Mayor of Carterton, journalist and academic Richard Pamatatau, activist Julia Amua Whaipooti, and artist and scholar Tāwhanga Nopera
