This year, with the dawn rising of Matariki comes the world premiere of Rōmeo rāua ko Hurieta, performed live entirely in te reo Māori at Auckland Museum’s Māori Court.

Join us for this whānau-friendly presentation of the classic Shakespearean love story; directed and performed by some of the country’s best Māori language talent.

Te Haumihiata Mason, translator of Troilus and Cressida and Chief Editor of Te Pātaka Kupu dedicated a year to translating the bard’s words into te reo Rangatira, and Te Arepa Kahi, director of film Mt. Zion will direct the play with an all-star cast of Māori language speakers.

The Matariki Season of Shakespeare aims to be an annual event on the te reo Māori calendar, and Rōmeo rāua ko Hurieta is the inaugural performance.

“Te hara i ō ngutu?
E kō, whakahokia mai taku hara.”
Sin from thy lips?
O trespass sweetly urged.
Give me my sin again.
