Portland Cement just south of Whangārei has become a landmark sustainability project for manufacturing. The plant will divert about 50 percent of the 6.3 million tyres that otherwise go to New Zealand landfills each year.

The opening by James Shaw on 29th March 2021 marked completion of the first funding stage ($11.6 million) of a total $28 million grant from the Waste Minimisation Fund administered by the Ministry for the Environment.

A free bus leaves at 10am from MOTAT and Golden Bay will provide refreshments prior to a 90-minute tour of the site. Return time late afternoon depending on traffic.
