Did you know Pukekawa (Auckland Domain) is actually an extinct volcano? Don't worry, it won't blow up anymore, but because it was once a volcano, the soil is really great for trees and plants. There are many beautiful trees and shrubs that grow in a ring shape around the Domain and have heaps of cool bush tracks to explore.

As a Mini Museum Member, you can go exploring in this awesome native bush with Robert Vennell, a nature scientist who works at Auckland Museum. You'll learn the history of the trees here, like which ones are poisonous and which ones you can eat plus lots of cool stories about them. Yes, trees have stories too!

We'll start our adventure at the Museum and wind our way down to walk along the 'Lover's Lane' track. You'll learn so much more about the mini worlds that exist right outside your Museum.

Please make sure to wear comfy walking shoes, slip slop slap with sunscreen and a hat and wear clothes you can explore in. Robert reckons the best part of the bush is only 5 minutes down from the Museum and we can take our time exploring and still be back in time for morning tea!

Suitable for ages 5+, and no child can be left unattended. Mini Members 13 years and under need to be accompanied by a grown-up, don't forget to book them a ticket!

If conditions are not suitable for the event to go ahead, the walk will be moved to Sunday 9 March, and ticket holders will be notified.

Hi, I'm Robert Vennell

I write books about New Zealand plants and animals, and work as a Science Curator at Auckland Museum.

You might be wondering, what does a curator do? I have a really cool job working behind-the-scenes at the Museum. We have a collection of over 1 million plants, insects, fossils, birds, fish, rocks and minerals. I help look after and study these collections, and choose interesting things to go out on display at the Museum.
The Natural Science collection is incredibly valuable – it helps scientists learn more about life on planet Earth. It can help us to see patterns in nature, understand how plants and animals change over time, and even helps us discover new species!

I hope you'll join me for a walk through Pukekawa (Auckland Domain) to learn all about New Zealand plants.
