Honouring the past; inspiring our future.

The past is important as from it we learn and there is much to acknowledge – this is why the purpose of our organisation Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga highlights ‘honouring the past’. Alongside this the connection to the future needs to be real, meaningful, and forward focused – therefore our purpose highlights ‘inspiring the future’.

Heritage People, Heritage Places and Heritage Purpose will be a focus. Why? Because the challenges to heritage are alive and are becoming challenging. What we regard to be some examples of the current myths include that the economic benefits of heritage are questionable and negative; heritage is expensive; heritage properties are not good investments; heritage impacts negatively on development and sustainability. Heritage is ‘at risk’.

The purpose of the presentation on ‘Heritage in New Zealand’ is to provide rebuttal of these myths. This is something that those of us interested in heritage and history need to all understand. It is time for the silent majority to stand up and be united for heritage.
