The Great Kimberley Wilderness

Narrated by Luke Hemsworth, The Great Kimberley Wilderness is a 35-minute virtual reality documentary that transports you to one of the most spectacular and pristine landscapes in the world.

Guided by the Traditional Owners and science, you will journey across magical coastlines, and venture into the heart of this ancient landscape unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Fly over the edge of the thundering King George Falls, explore the vibrantly striped domes and majestic gorges of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park and travel back over 350 million years to the great Devonian Reef to explore ancient geology, that has been pivotal to life as we know it.

Almost two billion years in the making, get ready to experience the wonders, culture, and magic of this unique and precious landscape, like never before!

Plan your visit

Please allow up to 45mins for the VR Journey and plan your visit to the Museum during peak times. Please also ensure you arrive at the venue 10 minutes before the start time. Due to the nature of the technology, the VR Journey must be played at the same time for all ticket holders. If you are late for the session, your ticket/s will automatically be forfeited, and we cannot guarantee transference to another session on the same day, as this is subject to availability.

Strict hygiene protocols have been implemented for the VR Experience to provide a safe and hygienic environment for our visitors. In addition, a disposable hygiene mask can be provided on request to be worn under the VR headset during the experience. All VR headsets have been sanitized and UV cleaned in-between sessions.

Everything you need to know

+Where is this experience located

VR Journeys is taking place on Level 1, in our Learning Labs adjacent to the Te Whiwhinga Imaginarium gallery. Take the lift up to Level 1 and turn right. There will be signage pointing the way. 
Please arrive no later than 10mins ahead of your scheduled film screening time.

+Entry and parking 

Parking is available in the underground Museum carpark; the first 30 minutes are free. All VR Journeys ticketholders are encouraged to allow plenty of time to arrive at the Museum, especially in case of rain and during peak periods and weekends. Onsite parking can be very limited especially during the weekends and on public holidays. Finding your way to the meeting point on Level 1 will also take some time.

+Meet 10 mins early

Out of respect for other VR Journey-goers, late-comers won't be admitted. Auckland Museum can get busy, especially on weekends and in school holidays. Please allow plenty of time to arrive, including to find a carpark if you're driving. Please be at the Learning Labs on Level 1 no less than 10 mins ahead of the start time of the VR session.

+Health, Safety and Wellbeing

People with photosensitive epilepsy could have seizures, triggered by flashing or blinking displays.

+Recommended age

Virtual Reality is recommended for 8+ years. Younger children may attend at the discretion of their accompanying parent or guardian.

+Caregivers/ chaperones

One adult caregiver per child or family group is required to attend throughout the session to chaperone and join in the fun.

+No food or drink allowed

To keep our taonga safe from pests, no food or drink is permitted in the VR Journey space. You’re welcome to consume any food and drink bought from home in the Kai Room on the ground floor.

+Wheelchair access

This space is wheelchair accessible. Please use the elevator to get to Level 1 and seek assistance from our friendly team at the entrance to the VR experience if needed.

+General Admission required in addition to VR Journeys ticket

General Admission is required in addition to VR Journeys tickets. General Admission is FREE for Auckland residents with a MyMuseum or Membership card or proof of address, or by donation for those from the rest of New Zealand. International visitors are required to purchase General Admission tickets. These can be added to your cart when you purchase your tickets.

+No recording in the cinema

Strictly no recording devices are permitted within the VR Journey Space. No audio and/or video recording of any film is permitted at any time. 

+No refunds or exchanges

No refunds and/or exchanges are permitted for latecomers or no-shows. Where non-admittance has been due to a clear fault or cancellation by the Museum, then transfers to another available session can be made where capacity is available.
