This year, our poets are invited to respond to the theme, Resilient Bonds: War’s Human Legacy.

Explore the enduring connections forged through war—relationships that transcend time, distance, and even conflict. From the liberation of Le Quesnoy by New Zealand troops to the vast underground tunnels in Arras, France, dug by Kiwi miners, from the occupation of Sāmoa by New Zealand in WWI, to the Pacific troops who have fought alongside New Zealanders, war has left behind more than just scars. It has created lasting bonds—alliances, friendships, and partnerships—between nations, communities, and individuals.

This competition invites you to reflect on these powerful human connections: the friendships and families formed, and the stories of those who found love and camaraderie while serving far from home.

Whether you draw from personal experiences, historical events, or imagined perspectives, we want to hear your voice. Submit your poem and celebrate the threads of friendship, resilience, and remembrance that continue to bind us across borders.

The competition is open to all ages. There are three age categories: 18 years +, 12 - 17 years and 11 years and under.

Entries must be received by 5PM on Wednesday 16 April 2025.

Entries will be judged by a panel of Museum writers, curators and educators. The judges' decision is final. Finalists, chosen from each age category will be invited to read their entries inside the Museum on Anzac Day at 10AM. Each finalist will receive a $100 gift card.

The Museum would like to acknowledge our sponsor, Eddie Mann, and his late wife, Michele Mann for their generous support of this programme.
