Additions and Corrections to the Rolls of Honour

Auckland War Memorial Museum is a memorial to those who served for New Zealand and paid the ultimate sacrifice. It commemorates those who lost their lives on active service in South Africa, during the First and Second World Wars, in Korea, Malaya-Borneo, Vietnam, Bosnia, Kuwait, East Timor and Afghanistan. They are remembered in the Level 2 Halls of Memories, ensuring that their names live in the present and for future generations.

These spaces are a significant site of memory, a place where the public can recognise military service and its costs not only for individuals, but also for their families and friends, comrades and communities.

The Museum has taken care to identify that the names on these rolls of honour are correct, however we acknowledge that there may be some historical inaccuracies or oversights that require attention. To request an addition or correction, please follow the instructions below.

Process for Additions and Corrections to the Rolls of Honour

Requests for additions and corrections to the Auckland Rolls of Honour are assessed according to set criteria. Additions to the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Roll of Honour which meet the criteria will also be considered. To request an update or addition, please submit a Military History enquiry through our contact form, including the following information:

  • Service person's name
  • Service number
  • War / Conflict
  • Military Unit and Force
  • Date and place of death

Approved changes are implemented once every three years. The next batch of updates will be considered in 2024.

South African War

Based on the Roll of Honour at Ranfurly Veterans Home and includes all New Zealand casualties, either serving with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles or with British or other forces.

First World War
(unveiled on 24 April 1932)

There are six classes of men who are eligible to have their names on the scroll. The first are those who served with the Auckland Regiment or the Auckland Mounted Rifles and were killed while on active service or died as a result of that service.

The second are those who were born in the Auckland Provincial District, the third are those who enlisted in the Auckland province, and the others those who named their place of regular residence at the time of their enlistment as in the province, those whose next-of-kin resided in the province at the time of their attestation, and the last class those who the committee considers gave a claim to inclusion. In the latter class are Aucklanders who served with units away from New Zealand.

Based on the criteria outlined in the New Zealand Herald article dated 1 March 1930, "Roll of Honour. War Memorial Museum. Appeal for names issued. Classes of Those Eligible".

Auckland War Memorial – Scheme to Commemorate the Second World War

Deed of Trust

(b) UPON TRUST to expend out the Trust Fund such sum or sums as shall be necessary for the completion of the Hall of Memories in the aforementioned War Memorial Museum by placing therein:

(1) THE names of all those men and women of the Auckland Provincial District who being members of His Majesty’s Armed Forces in the Second World War of 1939-1945 were killed in action or lost their lives (whether before or after their discharge) from wounds received or disease contracted as the result of their service in that war or whilst they were held as prisoners of war or who, being members of the Merchant Navy during the course of that war, were killed in action or lost their lives (whether before or after their discharge) from sinkings of their ships or from wounds received or disease contracted as the result of enemy action during that war or whilst they were held as prisoners of war and

(2) THE names of all such men and women whose names are not already placed therein who were killed in action or lost their loves in similar circumstances or as the result of their services in His Majesty’s Armed Forces or in the Merchant Navy during the First World War of 1914-1918.

Korea, Malaya, and Vietnam
(unveiled in 1991)

Memorial lists all New Zealand service personnel who died on operational service during these conflicts.

Bosnia, Kuwait, East Timor, Afghanistan
and other operational service
(unveiled 30 June 2019)

To be eligible for inclusion on Auckland War Memorial Museum’s memorial to post-Vietnam War operational service casualties, an individual must be listed on the New Zealand Defence Force Roll of Honour or the National War Memorial Roll of Honour and have died on operational service after the Vietnam War. In exceptional cases the Museum Chief Executive may approve the addition of an individual not listed on the either Roll of Honour where circumstances warrant inclusion.
