While some individuals such a Kaipati enlisted in 1916 as part of the 3rd Māori Reinforcement, close to 30 Gilbert Islanders (now known as Kiribati) were recruited to reinforce the later Maori Contingents. Arriving in Wellington in October 1918 for embarkation overseas their service was cut short due to the influenza pandemic. It "saw them quarantined and returned to Auckland. Several died and the rest were repatriated following the Armistice. For the Gilbert Islanders this was a very lengthy process. Because of quarantine restrictions and lack of shipping, it was almost a year before they arrived home."1

The list is a work in progress. Please contact the Online Cenotaph team if you are aware of an individual of Kiribati or Gilbertese descent that is not represented on this list.
