"On 11 December 1941 when his company attacked very strong enemy positions on a ridge east of the Gazala defences and after his officers had ben wounded Sgt. Trewby who was acting as Compnay Sergeant-Major immediately took control of two platoons of the company. In the face of very heavy artillery, mortar and machine-gun fire he reorganised these platoons, alloted fresh positions and was personally responsible for the beating off a strong enemy counter-attack. His personal courage and coolness in face of danger was an inspiration to the men under his command. His actions were largely responsible for the defeat and destruction of a force overwhelmingly superior in numbers and proved to be the beginning of complete enemy withdrawal in that sector."
