  • Lee M Hill (13 March 1907-5 June 1952) was a film-maker and cinematographer. He was born in Carterton and died suddenly in Wellington. He was a freelance photographer before the war and an Army photographer in the 2NZEF in WWII. He was captured at Sidi Aziz in 1941. He was interred at Campo 57 in Italy, and after the Italian capitulation in 1943, the POWs were taken to Germany by cattle trucks. He was then interred in Oflag IX A/Z at Rotenburg an der Fulda. Early 1945 they were marched East through Germany averaging 20 kilometres per day, and this is documented with a series of photographs which can be found in the Turnbull Collection, National Library of New Zealand. He had camera and film unknown to the Nazi guards, and developed negatives in German prison camps in solution mainly composed of urine.
