  • Was badly wounded in the Western Desert in 1941, just prior to El-Alamein.
Took the place of a comrade who had been shot while helping to unload a munitions truck, under fire.
A mortar hit the truck and Lionel woke up under a ground sheet, among bodies to be buried.
The next day, the area he was in was captured by the Axis. Not being able to move, he was left behind.
His left hand was very badly swollen and an Italian soldier took a liking to Lionel's Ruby ring. The soldier wanting to cut the finger off in order to get the ring. Fortunately, a German officer stopped him. The area was re-taken by allied troops the next day and he was evacuated.
Upon arrival in Wellington, New Zealand - Lionel was on of only 10 walking wounded to disembark on Aotea Quay and directly transferred to the Casualty Clearing Station - directly across the road.
Part of the foundations are still there.
