  • Patrol-leader Eric Stevens, aged 14, was instrumental in saving two nurses from drowning at Taihape and received the Royal Human Society's medal and the Scouts Gilt Cross for Valour. This happened in 1928 and Eric dove into flood waters to rescue the two women. He went on to represent New Zealand at the Australasian Surf Life Saving Championships in Sydney, Australia and represented New Zealand in the Empire Games in swimming.   • Eric was my maternal grandfather. He was Poppy to me. He passed away in 1996 in North Shore Hospital, just a few blocks from where he lived for 50 years. I was always incredibly proud of him, I just wish I was old enough to know how much it would have meant for him to hear this. Kia Kaha Pop!
