  • His wife Nancy Ellison, in her autobiography "The Whirinaki Valley" published in 1957, describes meeting Terry on the platform of the Rotorua railway station on 7 September 1945 when he returns from the war: “He looked different somehow, tired, taut, not smiling at all. I caught his eyes. He had seen me and was struggling towards me, but it wasn’t the Terry I had said goodbye to on the same station four years before. He never came back.” A reader of the book writes in a letter to Nancy that she “appreciated to the full how you 'lost' your Terry in the war - for my husband came home a different man to what he went away, quite a lot. Therein lies a lot of sadness I think, in what war does to the souls of the men who come back, and can we ever understand how they think and react to the usual humdrum life afterwards.”
