  • Bennie (b 1921) operated Bennie's Home Cookery in Waihi, late 1940s-early 1950s. He stopped in Auckland very briefly post-WWII , living in Grey Lynn. He and his siblings were born in Waihi although there are no birth registrations. This is exemplified by their writing enthusiastically to 'Peter Pan' of the Auckland Star's children's pages in the early 1930s showing they lived there. His brother Henry James 'Harry' Bennie was a plumber later residing in Tauranga. George Richard Measures married a Mavis Irene Bennie of Waihi. Prior to enlistment records show he was a baker's assistant. It's likely Bennie had a bakery prior to WWII, that employed George and he then married their sister. Unfortunately, this advertising was one of the last things he did, as he passed away 1953 aged 32 years. It seems like a remarkably early death and was possibly a result of war wounds.
