  • Grandson of NZ immigrant William Joseph CAWKWELL (circa 1852) ', Walter(Tony) Irving CAWKWELL(1914-1965), was commanding officer of the 3 Field Surgical Unit, NZ Second Division, under General Sir Bernard Freyberg, at Cassino. Italy, WW2. He was field surgeon to Infantry Brigades, including the 28 (Maori) Battalion, under Lieutenant-Colonel A. Awatere, MC. The capture of Monte Cassino tolled some 55,000 Allied casualties, with German losses being estimated at around 20,000 killed and wounded.[5] German commander-in-chief in Italy, [Field Marshal Albert Kesselring.] Post war, he went on to a distinguished medical career; always a NZ Territorial soldier.

    At time of death, Walter Irving CAWKWELL was NZ Army Colonel in Charge of the Medical Units, Northern Military District. He received a full military funeral, with gun-carriage, and cortege flanked with military out-riders along the 5km ro
