  • John Temple Clere was wounded on the 20th March 1944 during the battle for Cassino. His spinal cord was severed and he returned to New Zealand as a paraplegic and died on 16 March 1950. His death was attributed to his war injuries. He received a soldiers burial and his name is recorded in the roll of the Royal NZ Engineers of those who lost their lives in the last war deposited in St Paul's Cathedral, London.
