  • Uncle Jim left UK to join his uncle in Albany NZ in 1927.
He had been in the Coldstream Guards in England but decided to help his uncle in the farming industry. However Jim missed army life and took NZ citizenship and joined the NZ army. He was a successful soldier, became a Captain, was mentioned in Dispatches and was awarded an MBE.
He kept in touch with his Southall family, writing often to his mother, sister Eva and brother Walter. He also wrote every Christmas to his younger brother Arthur ( my father) although Arthur was only about seven when Jim emigrated. He sent recorded messages to his mother on disc in the 1940/1950’s. That was the only time she had heard his voice since he left England.
I have a lot of his memorabilia as sadly he and Sylvia did not have any children .
