  • My great uncle Cliff, was the younger brother of my maternal Grandfather Herbert Osborne Bawden. In my lifetime Cliff lived in Australia, but visited for all major family events (big birthdays and weddings). My mother was particularly fond of her Uncle - he was youthful, smiling and easy going to the end. We have his medals and the few things he sent home from the time he was stationed in the pacific.
My Grandfather and his other two brothers were tall (6ft 2" plus) but Cliff was closer to 5ft5" (even shorter with age), the family joke goes that the tall genes were all used up by the time they got to the 4th son.
Unlike many kiwi families, Cliff was the only one of all my Grandparents siblings who saw active service during WWII, and fortunately he came home with out serious injury.
    I remember him fondly.
