  • Today we are remembering Uncle Bill McLaren (William Duncan McLaren, 1914 - 1998).

Uncle Bill worked in his father’s mine at Shag Point until the death of his mother in 1936, when he took over looking after the family and providing for them, growing a large garden, milking a cow, keeping poultry etc.

Bill served overseas in WW1 from 7 January 1941 until 2 September 1945, most of that time spent as a prisoner of war in Italy after being captured at Tobruk.

After the war Uncle Bill was herd manager at a dairy farm near Waikouaiti, and retired to Waikouaiti where he was known for his amazing garden.

Thank you to Uncle Bill's niece Heather Paton for this information.

    Rest in Peace, Uncle Bill.
