    • in 1940 I started training as a soldier. This was to include serving at Battery Point, Lyttelton, Ripapa Island, Godley Head, Wingatui, then Trentham, before leaving New Zealand on the four-funnelled Cunard Line Acquitania. We took 3 weeks to reach port Tewfik in Egypt, including a rough trip across the Australian Bight - eight days to Fremantle, two days in the SIream to Maadi Camp from where we could see dhows sailing on the Nile with Cairo in the distance.
