  • My uncle Jack Jordan is remembered with affection. Before the War he was a professional surveyor, and camped out when doing the road across the Mamakus (near Rotorua) with my mother (his only sister Marion) acting as camp cook. I was a pre-schooler, and it was an exciting event. He wrote me letters and sent coins from all the countries he visited, and I still have these, kept in a pencil-case from Bethlehem. His Jordan surname gave him entre into the royal family of trans-Jordan, and he was NZ Army advisor at the court of Emil Abdullah of trans-Jordan for some months, but he moved on when he found that a royal bride was being arranged for him! He was killed in the desert just before El Alamein proper. Jack's death occurred later in the same year as that of his younger brother Alan, who was in the NZRAF and got meningitis from burst ear-drums. Alan died in the NZ Hospital in Cairo. Their
