  • I am a son of John Charles Webb. i was born in May 1945, whilst the 2nd New Zealand Division was occupying Trieste.

Under pressure, Dad could sometimes be persuaded to talk about the (strongly contested; my term, not his) crossings of the Idice, Reno, Po and Adige rivers, en route to Padua ((22-29 April 1945) and thence to Venice and Trieste. He made special mention of the always-formidable German parachute divisions-well known to New Zealand soldiers (Crete and Monte Casino).

    Very proud of our Dad.
    Public - Graham John - Child - 24 April 2020
    Report
  • Several years before he died, Dad and I attended an ANZAC Day Service held at Rita Angus Retirement Village. During the service, Dad spoke of an old school friend who had died in service in Italy. Neither my mother or I had ever heard of this friend, but when I asked Dad about him, he said: "I think of him every day of my life."
