  • Private Bruce Robert Birrell is the eldest son of Mrs. H. Giassford, Gisborne. He left New Zealand in October last and was in Egypt three months before going to Italy. A keen spoilsman, he represented Poverty Bay in both football and cricket, as well as taking part in other sports. As a member of the Old Boys’ Rugby Football Club he gained junior representative honours and also played senior competition Rugby. A good cricketer, he represented Poverty Bay in senior matches on more than one occasion. He was for three years in the army in New Zealand before going abroad. Prior to going on service he was employed as a store-man by the Gisborne branch of Woolworths (N.Z.), Limited,
