  • Corporal E. K. Saunders, also reported wounded, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Saunders, Matawhero, and is a married man with two children, his family also being resident at Matawhero. He had spent all his life in that locality prior to entering the amy and was educated, at the Makaraka School. Corporal Saunders left New Zealand in August 1943, and was first wounded in the Cassino battle, a bullet passing through his arm without doing serious damage. His present wound also is not serious, according to advice received by relatives. The family record in the war is a good one, two brothers of Corporal Saunders having served with the Third Division in the Pacific, and another in a New Zealand unit on home Defence, while one sister is in a W.A.A.C. unit in Wellington
