  • John Harvey Farquhar attested for service with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in December 1939, he then entered Papakura Military Camp in January 1940. After attending training at the camp, he then embarked for overseas in May 1941, with the 21 Battalion. In December 1940 he left the UK for Egypt.

He officially entered Egypt in February 1941, and was then attached to the 18th Battalion he was possibly sent to Helwan Camp in Egypt one of the 60 men from the 21st Battalion and joined the 18 Battalion. The Battalion moved from Greece and then to Crete, John Harvey Farquhar was declared missing around the 18th May 1941, the 18 Battalion "Eighteenth Battalion had left for Greece 750 strong; it returned with 257. Of those who reached Crete, 105 were dead or missing, 110 were prisoners, and of those who got away many were wounded and all destitute." 18 Battalion, Official History.

Farquhar was then officially declared a Prisoner of War in July 1941, as a Prisoner he would have been taken to Salonika Transit Camp and from there it appears as though he was sent to Stalag XVIII-D, in Maribor Solvenia. In March 1943, he was transferred to Stalag 18-A, in Wolfsburg Austria. Stalag was liberated on the 11th May 1945, by the 8th Army and was reported safe in the UK on the 25th May 1945. Returning to New Zealand around July 1945.

In July 1946, he was posted to J Force, 2nd Section, Divisional Cavalry Battalion and served in Japan, there isn't too much information about his service in Japan, he disembarked in Japan in August 1946, it looks like while he was in Japan he spent some time in 6 New Zealand General Hospital, he may have briefly served with the New Zealand Medical Corps while there, then he was officially discharged from service in November 1947.

John Harvey Farquhar was awarded a medal from the Greece Government. AWMM
