Jack Carpell attested at Sarpi camp, Mudros on 7th October 1915 with the Australian and New Zealand Army Headquarters. It appears he made his own way to Egypt from South Africa to enlist (this is why his not on the NZ Nominal roll). He proceeded to Gallipoli with the Auckland Mounted Rifles on 20th October and was promoted to Corporal two days later.

He was Born in Shardi, Russia on 14th October 1876 and was working as a hotel manager in South Africa and had previously served during the South African war with the Protectorate Regiment Frontier Force. Jack proceeded to France with headquarters NZEF and was promoted Sergeant in 1st July 1916. He was awarded a Belgian Croix de Guerre while serving with the New Zealand forces.

Jack was discharged in the United Kingdom to take up a position under the Russian Department of the Ministry of Information on 12th June 1918. He married an English lady and they had one son, Alexander Monash Carpell. He was living in North Transvaal in 1926, and his wife stayed in England. From my research he had never visited New Zealand or Australia, however his son Alexander went to New Zealand at some point in his twenties after his mothers death, where he remained until his death in the 1980’s.
