    Barbara joined the Navy the first time during the war as a Steward. She left when the war ended and re-joined in 1947 as a writer for Captain Peter Phipps, HMNZS Philomel. Barbara enjoyed her short time in the WRENS, and was sad to leave because of family commitments. Family source. AWMM
