"George Corby was 2nd February 1877 at Richmond, Nelson. He trained in sail, gaining his certification as mate and master. After completing his apprenticeship, Corby served for many years as an officer on coastal trading vessels around New Zealand. After eight years as a master with the Patea Shipping Company, he joined the Union Steamship Company in 1915 as third officer. He served as an officer on the troopship Monowai in 1916-17 before being appointed master of the barquentine Illma in 1918. He served as master of several vessels for the next twenty years, principally cargo steamers, until his retirement from the U.S.S. Company in 1940. Corby subsequently delivered the French liner Ville D'Amines to Liverpool, it having being taken over at Papeete following the surrender of France in 1940. In November 1941 Corby was appointed the master of the barque Pamir at Sydney, resigning from this command in March 1942. Corby later went to Australia and took command of a United States liberty ship servicing the South-West Pacific." Beattie and Pomeroy, p.62. AWMM
