  • 'Gerald Fonstin Finlay was admitted as a student in the first cohort of Veterinary Science students at the University of Sydney. His forebears were among the first settlers in New Zealand, in 1846, and he received his early education at Auckland Grammar School. Gerald came to Sydney in 1910 to enrol in the newly-established Veterinary School, and he was one of the class of eight who in March 1914 were the first students to gain the Bachelor of Veterinary Science.' Also educated at the Universities of Wisconsin and Cambridge.

    First posted to the 1st Light Horse Brigade and then served with the 1st Division in Egypt. Transferred to the 5th Division on formation and served on the Western Front. Went on to work at the Universities of Sydney and Edinburgh and work as a consultant Veterinarian.

    'Served in WW2 as a Major in AASC and was responsible for the establishment of an Army Food Technology School, staffed by officers of the CSIRO. He was the first Vet in Australia to take up Animal Husbandry.' Source: University of Sydney Archives and Record Management Services. AWMM
