  • Son of Cecil Walter and Annie Mercer of Auckland, New Zealand.

    Private Mercer served with the 4th Infantry Battalion (Private, Service No. 209) at Gallipoli. He was wounded in action on 8 May 1915. Private Mercer returned to Australia on 6 August 1915 and was discharged medically unfit on 17 January 1916. He was re-attested for Home Defence as a Recruiting Sergeant Australian Military Forces (Citizen Forces) on 7 February 1916. He died from typhoid fever in Bowral Hospital, aged 21 years.

    Private Mercer is a recent addition to the roll of Great War Dead-he was accepted for commemoration, after research, dead on 3 March 2017. AWMM
