Known to the family as 'Cobber Jack'. From family stories he was a fine teacher. When working in Taumarunui he was well-ahead and taught the children from the Native School (when they were merged into one school system) hygiene, language, practical skills, and manual work like gardening, building, repairing and using mechanical things. He also had a motor car block engine exposing the working parts and he was greatly respected by the students and parents alike. His teaching was his life, as it was with Elinor his wife, and they didn't worry too much with material things. He found pleasure and relaxation in hunting, much of it with Elinor's youngest brother, Samuel Ammon (whom they adopted age 10 when his parents, Catherine and Dan Ammon, separated following the sale of the Taheke farm on Hokianga Harbour). Sam was happy with Bob, Vivian and Athol as 'brothers' and he had a great love for 'Cobber Jack'. Vivian was Oswald's third son and he became a Wellington chemist. Family source. AWMM
