    A gun of his Battery was hit and the ammunition in the pit exploded, the gun was thrown a distance of 40 yards and the men of the detachment in the shelter trench buried by displaced earth. He showed great coolness in organizing and directing a digging party which after an hour's work under fire recovered the whole detachment. He had to take over command of the Battery when the Commander was wounded and gave a very praiseworthy exhibition of coolness and gallantry for so young an Officer. AWMM
