Citation: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. His reconnaissances were of great value to the brigade. He continually kept in touch with the enemy and reported the disposition of our own troops. When in command of a section of guns left behind to cover a withdrawal he engaged the enemy till they were within 300 yards, firing over open sights." "For conspicuous gallantry while attached to the Royal Field Artillery. During an action the British infantry had retired and Lieutenant Newman's guns on one ridge were confronted with the German artillery advancing over another ridge. By his coolness and determination he kept his guns in action until the infantry could come up, so that the British Artillery was saved. For this he earned high commendation, was promoted to a captaincy and awarded the M.C. [Military Cross]." AWMM
